I Hope You Dance
Michelle Medley on Passionate Work

Sometimes at the office when I’m standing around the microwave, waiting for seconds to pass, if no one’s looking, I’ll tap dance. Sounds juvenile, I know, but if you type all day with your fingers, pounding the floor with your feet is a natural progression of working with the other end of yourself.

And why do that? I say for balance. Dance is an act of passion. Who we are and what we do outside the workplace shouldn’t get dropped at the door when we cross the corporate carpet. My dance teacher is 83 years old and still dances younger than springtime, so it must be good for the sole.

Are you dancing through life, or watching others who are passionate? I hope you dance, and by that I mean, I hope you practice your passion. I like the advice that George M. Cohan, America’s Yankee Doodle Boy, got from his father: Learn all the things you want to do in life, but first, learn to dance.

Michelle -- I love that you use the phrase "practice your passion." The word "passion" suggests something instinctive, emotional. Maybe even effortless. But your point is a good one; if we don't practice our passions, we will lose them.

But it means so much more. I dance when I help a windblown stranger pick up his papers. I dance when I compliment the nervous job seeker in the elevator. I dance when I let the elderly driver into the stream of traffic. I dance when I wink at the small child whom I just spotted being funny when he thought no one was looking. I dance when I take the lost puppy home. Each step out of my normal routine and safe comfort zone is a dance step of life. Yes. I say. Yes. I dance. Would you care dance?

I'm with ya Michelle! I dance everywhere. In my car when I'm driving, in line at the store, around my livingroom in my underwear... but I definitely don't tap dance. I just sorta swing my hips and get down with my bad self. :D ~Monica
