What Does Diversity Mean Now?

Diversity is about managing talent. Equality is about race, gender, orientation and how t o manage that talent effectively without discrimination.

As a black male I personally find diversity policies patronising, unless they are referring to managing talent.

I hold the perhaps unpopular position that diversity isn't about mixing up a bunch of people from different races just because they're different. That is a bunch of crap if you ask me. (can I say crap on the Internet?) ;) Diversity comes from bringing together different thinking styles, different levels of creativity, different experiences, and reaping the benefits of that collective knowledge. Who says a team made of white males can't be as "diverse" as a racially mixed, gender mixed team? Diversity is all in the brain, not in the skin. ~Monica

About a year ago in the pages of Worthwhile, we tackled an issue that made some people squirm: The Search for True Diversity. Is it still about race and gender, we asked, building equity into a system that we all agree once lacked that fairness? Or has that fairness level been reached to the point where diversity is a deeper question, one of diversity of thought instead of race or gender? In other words, can 2 white males provide more diversity than a more visibly diverse team? Or is there still catch-up to do? What do you think?

Given where manufacturing is going (not to mention a trazillion consumers), companies interested in having diverse perspectives at the table would do well to have Chinese, Indian, and Russian execs on the team.

I worked for a Fortune 10 company. They recruited from 3 top schools. Everyone thought and did work in the same way. The other interesting thing was that these people were so use to competing in school that they brought that competition to any internal interaction. The company finally dealt with diversity by employing people who had demonstrated success in business, not in the classroom. It was an interesting experience and I saw the benefits of diversity of thought and experience.

Diversity has no more to do with gender or skin color than truth has to do with the jacket color of the book it is printed in. True diversity can only be diversity of thought, opinion and experience (which may, to an extent, mirror more shallow cues). Anything less seems to me to be nothing but more of what we have had for the thousands of years ... veiled discrimination.

Most companies do nothing more than lip-service for this subject. Here's the interesting thing that I notice from the ad-buying world: When magazines that appeal to white men (think Business Week or Fortune) run special sections on Diversity recruitment, companies flock to them. Isn't that just companies checking a box instead of real recruiting?

I think you hit the nail on the head with the idea that true diversity comes from thought rather than race or gender. I think employers have a problem with hiring people who think like they do and think they are finding diversity by hiring multiple races. But if every person that they hire thinks like the boss, it doesn't matter how many races you represent, there is no diversity there.

It means the same thing it always has--that there needs to be a sense of fairness, a sense of equity in the process. If thats still skin color and gender, so be it.
