Lightning in a Bottle
Kevin Salwen on Culture

A remarkable thing is happening this week: For the first time in nearly 3 years, 'The DaVinci Code' will not be in the top 15 on the New York Times bestseller list this Sunday.

The Dan Brown thriller is falling victim to new hardcovers by Danielle Steele, Nicholas Sparks and other hot novelists. 'The DaVinci Code' has been on the Top 15 list for a staggering 136 consecutive weeks, and has not yet been published in paperback.

What I love about this is it shows us once again that you can focus-group, survey, poll, calculate, pre-market and design all you want to try to pre-plan your big hit. But sometimes lightning just strikes. And it's often the trigger for the fire that no one expected. And isn't that what's just so damn fun about business (and life) sometimes?

A while back I worked in the publishing industry. I seem to remember that in all reality the slots on the NY Times Bestseller list had more to do with how much a publishing house was willing to pay for their ranking than how many copies of a book were really selling.

Maybe the DaVinci Code publishers finally decided that they've finally milked that Number 1 slot for all it's worth.... just a thought.
