Google Does It Again
Kevin Salwen on Making a Difference

Well, our fave offbeat New Age company, Google, has stepped into the charitable world in a big way, setting up Google.org with a $1 billion entry grant (in stock). 'We hope someday this institution may eclipse Google itself in terms of overall world impact by ambitiously applying innovation and significant resources to the largest of the world's problems,' founder Sergey Brin wrote in the company's most recent annual report.

One interesting note about this: Even at that size, the new organization won't be in the top 20 philanthropies in the U.S. The Gates Foundation is #1, with a stunning $27 billion.

Great question. The problem of world poverty is so massive that I wonder what metrics are ever used to track a program's success or failure. Anyone know?

Are there any bookmarks anywhere that anal, yse whether Gates Foundation gets good impacts for its 27 billion? I realise it tackles some of the big/deep challenges, yet its activity multipliers in grassroots humanitarian (people communities) around the world does not seem to be 27 billion large, at least not in urgent crisis places that emerge
