Apparel Disconnect
Anita Sharpe on Life

Walk down the street or look around the lobby of your office building or take an airplane trip -- have you noticed how badly most people dress? I'm not holding myself up as any great maven of style, but being a fashion plate isn't the point. I just can't help but be struck by how many magazines and TV shows there are today devoted to clothing, shopping and style -- just as more and more people seem to turn into total slobs. Who's reading all these style and shopping magazines and watching these TV shows?

While I agree that there are lots of people who have low self esteem who also feel they need to be well dressed it doesn't mean all fashionistas suffer...There is nothing wrong with wanting to look nice and being well presented. You don't have to spend a lot of money to have clean clothes that are in style and nobody says you have to follow the 'fashionistas' to look good...I for one feel better when I am not always schlepping around in my sweats...unless of course it's to head off to the pool...Just makes me feel better and believe me there is nothing wrong with my self esteem.

People who are fashion conscious typically have v. low self-esteem, defining their worth by how they look and what others think...instead of who they are.

Watching fashion shows is like going to the circus: it's fun to look at monkeys and freaks, see them preen and squawk over stuff that doesn't matter --- but you don't want to BE one, or take one home with you!

most people today do seem like total slobs, especially these young kids with the flip flops and the torn up pants. the lower back tatoo really is a turnoff in the workplace as well. i guess i sound like my mother, some things never change, right? i guess all you can do is get used to it.

I think a lot of people are stylistically stunned by surviving the switches from Dress for Success to Business Casual to Internet Informal back to Something More Professional...and they watch these shows and read the magazines with the same vicarious distance as armchair quarterbacks!
