Worthwhile Thought: Friday
Anita Sharpe on Passionate Work

'I feel rich by my own definition because I'm not a person who wants a mansion, a Lamborghini or a private yacht. You can be amazingly profitable, but without the right working atmosphere, you'll have a bunch of miserable, well-to-do people. But if you have a great internal culture, you can be barely profitable and people are happy. First and foremost, a business should be a cool place to work.' -- CD Baby Founder Derek Sivers, interviewed in the Sept/Oct issue of Worthwhile magazine

First and foremost, a business should be a cool place to work?

OK. I do like the idea of working in a cool place, but in light of recent events and upon reflecting on the difficulties so many people have faced in the job market in the past few years, I don't think I would put 'cool' atop my list of workplace requirements. Following is my short list of workplace requirements in no specific order.

1. Values diversity
2. Respects individuality
3. Entrepreneurial atmosphere
4. Pay for performance
5. Safe
