The Power of Many
Kevin Salwen on Making a Difference

There's a new twist to charitable giving over at amazon.com. The company has selected 10 nonprofits and is urging Amazon visitors to donate to the causes, which range from a program to provide voicemail to people in crisis to help for Appalachia. There are a couple of longtime Worthwhile faves in there too -- KaBoom, which builds playgrounds in poor communities, and Teach for America (Wendy Kopp is profiled in the September/October issue of Worthwhile).

But what I like about the way Amazon is handling this is each dollar serves as a vote. Says the site: 'Now it's up to you! Vote for your favorites by donating up to $1,000 to each through Amazon.com. All 10 nonprofits will keep the funds they raise; the organization that raises the highest dollar amount through Amazon.com by September 30, 2005, will be awarded a matching grant of up to $1 million from Amazon.com.'

Gimmicky? Sure. But if it brings more donations, that's a good thing. Anyone else out there seen cool ideas to bring cash to nonprofits?
