Buddy, Can You Spare a Billion?
Kevin Salwen on Business

I can't say I've paid much attention to prior news releases from the Competitive Enterprise Institute, an organization focused on removing government from our lives. But this one caught my eye: 'Boeing vs. Airbus: Battle of the Airliner Welfare Queens.'
I loved this line from Timothy Carney, the study's author: 'Washington launched this dispute, even though Boeing may be the largest beneficiary of corporate welfare in the U.S. Meanwhile, Airbus resembles more a government agency than a private business.'

Surprise, surprise. Top to bottom, the airline industry is a mess -- and a massive one at that. From the carriers to the manufacturers, almost no part of the system is self-reliant. Should we worry that governments play this heavy a role? Should we just presume that's where our tax dollars will be headed and shrug it off? Is this one industry that is just so critical to our economies and security that welfare queens should be a fact of life?
