TGIF and the Shrinking American Lifespan
Anita Sharpe on Passionate Work

I wasn't at all surprised to see that yet another big media company (Hearst, this go round) is launching yet another major magazine devoted to our leisure hours. Called Weekend, it's all about shopping, eating and, well, just about anything except how we spend the majority of our lives.

Roughly 50 years ago, we turned into a nation of people who live for Friday afternoons. By this measure, our national life expectancy has actually gotten much shorter since we only really live two days a week. Thus, the business case behind the launch of Weekend is clear.

The business rationale and question behind the launch of Worthwhile is a little different: Why does anyone think living two days a week is a good idea?
