Winner: Best Excuse Category
Kevin Salwen on Creativity

The news from Washington couldn't be more ridiculous. Earlier this month, it was revealed that the Bush administration paid conservative columnist Armstrong Williams for favorable columns. Now, syndicated columnist Maggie Gallagher has conceded that she too was paid -- a more paltry $21,500 compared with Williams' $240,000 -- to write nice things about the administration's push to strengthen families through marriage.

Never mind the outrage, the journalists' lack of ethics, the administration's smarmy strategy of buying columnists. The hilarious part of this latest story is Gallagher's comment in her column: 'I should have disclosed a government contract when I later wrote about the Bush marriage initiative. I would have, if I had remembered it.'

If she had remembered being paid $21,500 by the government?!?! It's the old 'I Forgot' excuse! Get me Steve Martin.

'You ... can be a millionaire.. and never pay taxes! You can be a millionaire ... And never pay taxes! You say ... 'Steve.. how can I be a millionaire.. and never pay taxes?' First.. get a million dollars. Now.. you say, 'Steve.. what do I say to the tax man when he comes to my door and says, 'You.. have never paid taxes'?' Two simple words. Two simple words in the English language: 'I forgot!'

It's still funny, all these years later. *grin* Here's a link to the version Steve Martin did in his monologue on his first SNL appearance.

I intend to use this excuse on April 15th. I'll also consider applying it to client engagements. As in, 'I would have delivered the strategic brief, if I had remembered it. Thanks for the money though.'
