An Unexpected New Passion
Anita Sharpe on Life

How deadly does this sound? Your son's good friend invites you to his middle school percussion-ensemble's rehearsal. Needless to say, I wasn't very excited about going and almost dropped my son off and ran errands.

For some reason, I decided to stay and the experience was. . . amazing. The group of 12 and 13-year-olds played a mix of African, Brazilian and Japanese drum songs that were, to my ears, perfect. I've never heard anything like it. (I tried to duplicate the experience by buying a couple of percussion CDs yesterday.)

It was a great reminder that a.) it's easy in this media-saturated world to get jaded and think we've seen it all; and b.) a new passion almost always arises when you least expect it.

Since my transition from the formal corporate world to the life of the self-employed a few years ago, I have made it a habit to try/visit/experience something new and different on a regular basis. Some activities have been disappointing but the vast majority have expanded my horizons and given me a better sense of the world as it is rather than the world as I thought it was.

It's also a reminder of how you can still be surprised and amazed by your child's abilities -- even after 12-13 years. Just another blessing of being a parent.
