What Replaces Sex at a Certain Age -- or Maybe Any Age?
Anita Sharpe on Culture

Paco Underhill, the widely respected retailing guru and author of Why We Buy , has a theory on why more and more companies are linking their brands to good causes: 'You know, a significant part of our nation is getting older, and as people get older, they get less interested in sex and more interested in spirituality,' he says in a story in today's New York Times.

But is it really the AARP crowd driving the move toward good works and purposeful living? It's the kids who are snapping up the Live Strong bracelets. It's youth-oriented companies like American Eagle Outfitters commissioning surveys about volunteering among people 15-25 (88% said they like the idea.) Abercrombie & Fitch, another teen brand, has kids lining up to pay a buck to have their picture taken with a hunk with the proceeds going to charity.

Abercrombie, if you recall, was the company taken to task not long ago for its racy catalogue. Maybe compassionate consumption is the new sex, after all.

Eben -- the premise of your site is interesting. When you get a chance, tell me a bit about your background -- either here or by email:info@worthwhilemag.com
thanks

No reason not to enjoy both--there being 24 hours in a day and all.

I prefer sex, in case you wondered.
