In Praise of Competition
Kevin Salwen on Passionate Work

The anticipated war between the Yankees and Red Sox almost turned into a laugher, as the New Yorkers won the first three games of the best-of-seven series. But two consecutive stunning extra-inning Boston victories once again showed how the rivalry between the two teams (and cities) won't go away. Both teams bring out the greatest intensity -- and greatest play -- in one another.

The fact is rivalries are marvelous for productivity. Wanting to kick the hell out of your rival is a healthy thing; it makes you focus harder, work more intensely, fight until the bitter end. Roberto Goizueta, the former CEO of Coca-Cola, once said something like: 'If there wasn't such a thing as Pepsi, we'd have to invent it.'

Who's the competitor who really motivates you?

Back to one of my favorite subjects -- the Beatles. Arguably, what made them great was the intense rivalry between John and Paul to write the 'A' side of the single.
