At Your (Maddening) Service
Kevin Salwen on Culture

valet.jpgI had lunch yesterday with a friend who is working on a newspaper story about 'bathroom valets' as they are now called -- people who hand you towels, mints and the like in restrooms. They are becoming increasingly popular in restaurants and clubs. This comes on top of the seemingly never-ending valet parking that is sweeping the restaurant scene.

I can't get a paper towel myself. I can't park my own car 20 feet away. As fond as I am of full employment, this all makes me wonder: When did I become so helpless?

You're competent. Surely, if you manage to fill up your own gas tank -- and are adept enough to drive your capable self to the club -- you can go the extra 7 yards and park the vehicle all by yourself, too.

And I'm willing to bet that you've been potty-trained by experts, and have had excellent skills in that arena, as well.

To use a football analogy, should you run 99 yards for a touchdown, and then pass the ball to the towel boy?

I think not.....
