Where Jobs Aren't Going
Kevin Salwen on Business

A new report is out from the U.S. Labor Department on offshoring (the kind of outsourcing that sends job functions overseas) and the news hopefully will be enough to quell some of the hysterics. I doubt it will bring Lou Dobbs down off his soapbox on the subject, but it brings new data to a debate that so far has been about emotion. The report shows that in the first quarter of 2004, only about 2% of major layoffs stemmed from companies moving jobs offshore either on their own or by hiring another firm to do the work. In contrast, more than twice that percentage lost their jobs because their work moved to another part of the U.S. To read the full report, click here (fair warning: it's virtually unreadable).

I know there will be plenty of debate over whether this report is politically motivated. And it doesn't address the silly rules that provide U.S. companies with tax incentives to move jobs overseas. But maybe now we can debate on the issues.
