Federal Nonsense Commission
Kevin Salwen on Culture

This morning, I was listening to the radio and heard one of those same-old, same-old car dealer ads that promise cash-back, amazing financing, yadda yadda. The overly loud spot was followed by 5-10 seconds of legal disclaimers recited at such an intense pace that even dogs couldn't have picked up that frequency. And it got me thinking about how ridiculous the FCC rules have become. Exactly what purpose did that unintelligible disclaimer serve? Taking it a step further, though, what purpose does that unintelligible agency serve? Who and what is it protecting from anything? CNET's Declan McCullagh has an interesting piece on the subject here that goes well beyond the recent over-the-top crackdowns on Janet Jackson and shock jocks (incidents that of course did nothing but increase the interest in those performers).

(Thanks to Tom Maszerowski for the link.)
