Help for the Helpers
Kevin Salwen on Making a Difference

I sit on several nonprofit boards that span my interests: from Atlanta Habitat for Humanity on one end to the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center on the other. I join them because I want to a.) help, b.) learn and c.) meet interesting people. But I've always felt just a little bit behind the curve in what I need to know to be an effective board member; I can be a leader in some areas, but in serious need of Cliffs Notes in others.

Now, I've come across an electronic newsletter called Board Cafe, which provides practical advice for nonprofit board members. Topics range from how much to pay an executive director to a piece on 'What to Do When You Really, Really Disagree with a Board Decision.' It's smart and helpful material.

Kevin,
You were right. A day in the sun with the folks at Habitat for Humanity did wonders for my psyche. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to feel good about themselves for a day. And for the folks who've been volunteering all along, I think your cool.

Kevin-

I have a good friend of mine who has served and currently serves on a few non-profit boards. If you would like his contact info I would be happy to give it to you.
