Go Get 'Em Gap
Kevin Salwen on Making a Difference

This might be the most encouraging step in the social responsibility arena in years: Gap Inc. -- owner of Gap stores, Banana Republic and Old Navy -- just released its first CSR report. In a remarkable and blunt series of statements, the company conceded that its track-record has been anything but stellar in terms of how its clothing is produced. Among the most blatant sins: serious verbal and psychological abuse of workers and substandard pay at dozens of plants around the world.

In releasing the report, Gap vowed to do better. 'We feel strongly that commerce and social responsibility don't have to be at odds,' CEO Paul Pressler told shareholders in San Francisco.

Bravo!! If a player this important can start taking action against sweatshops -- as Gap promises -- the ripple effect could change an industry that has abused workers for years. In fact, this AP story quotes a Wal-Mart spokeman as saying that the Arkansas company is planning to examine Gap's methods to see if it can improve its own apparel sourcing. This could be very big.

Well that sounds like a welcome blow for straightforwardness over spin to me!
