Quick Everyone, Eyes Away
Kevin Salwen on Culture

I have to think it's the most insidious mass communication device since airports decided to blast televisions at me constantly: the elevator TV screen. There I am in a 6x6 box with no escape possible from this screen throwing images/listings/garbage at me. Most of it is just plain stupid (the poll I'm supposed to go online to take, asking: When is the last time you read a book? Answer choices: This week, this year, never).

The biggest issue, though,

is it's one more reason for people NOT to interact with each other. No hellos to the person staring at the screen; no 'beautiful day, isn't it?' No niceties at all.\n\nThe places for us to interact are shrinking. I think that's sad -- and I have to wonder if it's driving us to be less creative because we're less interactive.

Good point Kevin! This makes me ponder the reason that I feel so connected today.

After spending the last week in the low-country of Highlands, NC with a whole bunch of meeting and greeting of my new (old) neighbors...my wife and I realize that this is the stuff of life. When someone even so much as drives by in the back country they will stop or at least wave. When you respond with a 'howdy' they will STOP and turn off their truck in the middle of the road for 5-10 minutes of conversation.

This interatction is what makes the mountains the mountains. This relaxes the sould and ballances out the stress of annonomous chat on the the electronic highways.
