Jungle Story
Kevin Salwen on Creativity

We've all read plenty about people being screwed out of intellectual property rights and about musicians in particular signing away their rights. Still, the piece in yesterday's New York Times about the four-decade saga of the song that became 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight' is remarkable. It's the story of the birth of a musical style, the naivete of artists and their descendants, and, finally, of a victory for the family. It's worth a read, even just to learn how Wim-o-weh came about. (Oh, and I kind of love the clever headline too: 'In the Jungle, the Unjust Jungle, a Small Victory.')
