Gearing Up
Anita Sharpe on Business

Bring up the subject of terrible places to work and a friend of mine tells the story about his first job at a trade-magazine publisher. The job was both deadly dull and very rigid. The editorial staff had to write about things like toilet-bowl cleaners and do it from 8:30 to 5:30 with a strict, 45-minute lunch break. The afternoons became so agonizing, he says, that around 4:30 everyone would begin 'gearing up' to leave. By 5:00, the staff was poised at their clean desks essentially waiting for the bell to ring. By 5:31, there wasn't a car in the parking lot.

Do workplaces like this still exist?

oh, heck yes....they are EVERYWHERE! There is only one reason the show 'the office' is so popular, much of it based of real stuff that actually happens and people relate. I know there are days I do as does the staff where I work. Also the same reason this site exists with my favorite demotivational posters http://www.despair.com/cluelessness.html
