Groan. The New York Times today revealed in a story that Wal-Mart has been hiring and planting pro-Wal-Mart stories with bloggers.
Granted, it was only a matter of time. There's a long history of folks being paid off by either a corporate or government interest to speak positively about an issue being closely scrutinized. But I feel bad. I've written about how impressed I am with the company's recent commitment to the environment. And I've fended off those who attacked the company saying it's just a stunt.
Now, I've gone from cautiously optimistic to simply suspicious.
To the PR flacks at Edleman who drew up this plan, here's a phrase for your PR war room in Bentonville and to those bloggers who've taken the bait,
'Everyday Low Ethics.'
