Could You Go Island?
Kate Yandoh on Life

I recently got back from my most faraway and unplugged trip ever, to the little-visited Molokai. Although the majority of the population is, as they put it, 'Hawaiian by nature,' we met dozens of 'mainland' folks who'd settled down to a life of spectacular isolation punctuated by the occasional odd job and the complete lack of stoplights, chain stores, shopping malls, or evening entertainment options beyond the 10pm unveiling of the next day's hot bread at the bakery.

We couldn't help but wonder if we could do it. Here's what we thought it would take:

- Some sort of timeframe plus ...
- a solid reason (a 6-month sabbatical, a year spent on a community project.)
-Internet access (it was really fun not to have it for a few weeks, but not forever.)
-Honing a few more 'transportable' practical skills (anything performed with tools, scissors or Tarot cards)

Have any of you ever taken off to live a radically simplified island life? What would it take for you to set sail?

Not me but both my kids have done so. They travel to the west coast of Canada, to a small island. One of my children does this every year for several years and lives outdoors most of the time. Very simple, very challenging, very interesting. They come home with great stories.
