MBAs Are Hot
Kevin Salwen on Business

Once again, MBAs have become the degree of choice -- for employers, that is. A piece in USA Today notes that 'salaries and signing bonuses of fresh graduates took a double-digit jump in 2005 to a record average $106,000.' That's 13.5% higher than in 2004.

A look inside the numbers shows that the hot arenas for new hires are not just investment banking but also health care (including biotech) and a resurgent tech industry. One other encouraging note, as well: Down low in the USA Today story, nonprofit work is listed as a growth factor -- not because the jobs pay highly but because they are boosting the demand side. No surprise here: We know that more and more MBAs (like this piece from Kellogg student Andrew Youn) want to use their degrees to make the world better.

As a Kelley MBA (Indiana U.) working for a non-profit arts org, I can tell you a lot of us need more MBAs on staff rather than on the Board of Directors.
