The New Golf
Anita Sharpe on Life

One of the best decisions I made in the past two months -- personally and professionally -- was to take up biking. On the days I ride, I get at least twice as much done as I do on non-biking days. One of those mother-aphorisms turns out to be true: energy begets energy.

I ride to clear my head, not to get in jock form and certainly not to network. So I cringed just a bit when I read that in Silicon Valley, cycling is the new golf. Paul Saffo, research director at the Institute for the Future in Palo Alto, told the New York Times, 'If you're not part of the peloton, you're not part of the deal.'

I just moved to Boston from NYC and I've gone so far as to opt for a bike instead of a car. I'm even riding it through the winter. Just rode through the snowy streets for the first time today. Great exercise and I'm saving a TON by not owning a car!

Ugh .... I cringed a lot when I clicked on this story. I'm like you -- I bike to clear my head. I take my time so I can see, smell and hear the world around me, not race spandex-clad colleagues.
